Colocation is gaining prominence, leaving many IT managers trying to handle incident, problem and change management for a configuration that extends outside of the internal data center. Organizations turning to colocation need to take a holistic approach to operational planning if they want to maximize the benefits of the service plan, and making strategic IT service desk updates can play a vital role in this process.

According to a recent study from the Synergy Research Group, the U.S. retail colocation market experienced an 8 percent year-over-year revenue expansion in the third quarter 2013. John Dinsdale, a chief analyst and research director at Synergy Research Group, explained that the United States boasts the most mature colocation market, and the industry is set to continue growing alongside the cloud.

"Looking ahead, the adoption of cloud infrastructure services will act as a damper on some aspects of the colocation market, while stimulating others,"" said Dinsdale. "We forecast that U.S. colocation revenues will grow by a CAGR of 7 percent over the next five years."

Making strategic IT service desk investments is critical for organizations exploring colocation or other forms of IT outsourcing. Such strategies add environmental diversity to the technology landscape, but IT managers with the right service desk tools can still support process efficiency in such an environment.
