3 Steps to Getting the CMDB in Shape

09/24/2013 by: The SunView Team

A good CMDB can give IT workers the transparency, structure and knowledge they need to manage the configuration quickly and efficiently. An ineffective CMDB can leave IT workers scrambling to keep up with operational demands. While the importance of establishing an effective CMDB is clear, the best ways to develop a quality solution are not as straightforward. However, there are a few key steps that companies can take to build the CMDB they need.

1. Get the Right Solution
Not all CMDB architectures are created equal, and organizational IT needs can change quickly. As a result, the CMDB that guides companies through those changes must be flexible enough to adapt and be adjusted based on shifting demands. There is plenty of variety available when choosing a CMDB, as the relational database is capable of performing a wide range of functions. Focusing on the tasks that are most important for IT workers.

2. Make Sure the CMDB is Correctly Populated
Getting a CMDB populated with the right configuration items can prove incredibly challenging, even when automated solutions are in place. Generally speaking, a combination of automation and manual documentation is the best path to establishing the relational database. However, the process is not finished there. Companies that want to maximize the value of their CMDB investment must also develop repeatable and clear processes for updating the database when the configuration changes. Otherwise, the CMDB can quickly become a hindrance because the database does not take the full range of configuration items into account.

While periodically pausing to make sure the CMDB is up to date is a solid option, it is often best to have a specific set of rules pertaining to how updates will be performed.

3. Get Authorizations in Order
Establishing the proper authorizations for IT managers can be critical to finding success with a CMDB. Generally speaking, it is important to establish the authorization in such a way that minor day-to-day changes can be made quickly and with minimal oversight beyond what is inherently provided through a CMDB system. Larger changes usually need higher-level employees involved. Having the right authorizations in place can maximize the skills of IT workers without creating risks, ensuring successful operations.

A well-defined and populated CMDB will help to drive efficiency within the IT organization and create considerable value for both technical and business teams.
